Dr Lana Kossoff graduated with Honours from the University of New South Wales in 1982. She received the John Kerridge Memorial Prize in Psychiatry for best performance as an undergraduate. She attained Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP) in 1993 and became an Associate Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Medical Administrators in 1995.
As a Consultant Psychiatrist, Dr Kossoff has worked in a number of clinical and administrative roles. She is a Member of the Faculty of Old Age Psychiatry and a Foundation Fellow of the Faculty of Forensic Psychiatry RANZCP. She has always maintained a clinical load in addition to her civil forensic psychiatry private practice where she has worked for over 20 years. Additionally she has worked as the Executive Director of Macquarie Hospital North Ryde, where she was responsible for clinical, financial and administrative leadership of Macquarie Hospital, a 180-bed hospital specialising in the treatment of mental illness.
She has also worked as head of a number of Aged Care Psychiatry services across New South Wales. About a decade ago Dr Kossoff commenced NSW’s first aged care psychiatry telehealth outreach service where she was able to consult to various services across NSW including aged care psychiatry, mental health teams, aged care assessment treatment teams and nursing homes.
Dr Kossoff has been working in a private medico-legal practice for the last 20 years. She has provided in excess of 4000 medico-legal assessments for government bodies, solicitors and insurers. She previously worked as an Assessor for the Motor Accidents Authority and the Workers Compensation Commission. She has also lectured in the area of whole person impairment assessment in psychiatry for these services and other solicitors and providers.
Dr Kossoff’s experience in administrative, forensic, clinical and telehealth psychiatry, provides strong foundations for her to undertake special assessment of testamentary capacity cases, medical negligence cases, fitness for work assessments and work in other civil forensic jurisdictions. She has particular expertise in the assessment of older patients with cognitive impairment as well as patients who develop nervous shock as a result of medical negligence of a hospital or health service resulting in the death of their family members. She maintains a clinical practice in the assessment of memory disorders in addition to working in her forensic practice.
